To win a checkers game quickly, you have to gain an advantage. You can achieve superiority on the board by attacking the opponent’s pieces, setting up shots, creating opportunities for an “opposition,” freezing your rival, and getting a king.

#1 Make a shot!

As you already know, one of the basic rules in checkers says: capture is mandatory! Let’s learn how to use this rule to our advantage.

We have to sacrifice a certain number of pieces in order to collect more pawns from our opponent. This tactical play is called a “combination” or “shot.” It is the fastest and most effective way to win games in checkers.

Here’s how a shot typically plays out: you sacrifice a pawn, and your opponent is forced to capture it, opening a hole in their own formation. You sacrifice a second pawn into that hole, forcing another capture — and now your opponent’s pieces are lined up so that you can capture several of them in a single turn, often reaching a king in the process. White, having taken the bait twice, ends up with no good moves left and loses several pieces for the price of two.

#2 Attack “lonely pieces”

Beginner players often make several moves with a single piece, pushing it too far forward. We can then easily win that pawn by attacking it.

Picture a position where white has pushed a lone pawn deep into black’s side of the board, away from any support. Black can attack that pawn from either of two directions — both work here. Once the attack is made, white has no way to defend it: any further move of that pawn also leads to a capture. Black gains a pawn and moves closer to winning the game.

#3 “Opposition”

This is another method to look for during a game. “Opposition” is simply pieces facing each other head-on. The winner is whoever is forced to make the last move into that opposition — if black moves into it, black wins; if white is forced into it, white wins.

Picture three black pawns squared off against three white pawns along a diagonal, each pair blocking the other. Whichever side has to move first into that line loses material, because moving forward walks straight into a capture. In a triple opposition like this, the side forced to move will lose all three pawns in the following exchanges.

#4 Blocking the opponent’s pieces

Another important and well-known method is to block all of the opponent’s pieces so they have no legal move at all. Look at what moves your opponent could make, then find a move that removes every one of those options.

For example, if black is deciding what to play, black can look at white’s few remaining pawns and pick a single move that closes off all of white’s options at once. From there, white is forced to give up pawns turn after turn until it runs out of moves completely — effectively blocked and unable to continue.

#5 Get the king first!

As you already know from the rules of American checkers, a king has an advantage over a regular pawn — it can move and capture backward as well as forward. Getting a king first gives you a big advantage and will probably lead you to victory.

If your path to the king row is clear and your opponent has no way to stop your pawn from reaching it, take that path. Even two moves’ head start toward a king can be enough — your opponent may not be able to catch up before you promote, which brings you much closer to winning the game.
